Andromeda Alpaca Yarns

About Andromeda Alpaca Yarns

Andromeda Alpacas originated as an Alpaca Stud, set on 30ha of picturesque gum studded country southeast of Adelaide in the Adelaide Hills (Fleurieu Peninsula), and was dedicated to the breeding of solid white Huacaya alpacas. Until 2005, we enjoyed a wonderful lifestyle and, despite a few setbacks that we all have experienced, were successful in meeting our breeding expectations and in addition had created the alpaca yarn business which today still trades as Andromeda Alpaca Yarns.

You can view our large range of alpaca yarns and garments in the Andromeda Alpaca Yarns Online Store located within the AABA Marketplace.

At the end of 2005, we were reluctantly forced to sell our wonderful property due to physical disability and have since sold our entire herd of alpacas. Now, we reside at Marino, a seaside suburb just south of Adelaide and have undergone many lifestyle changes including “playing grandparents” to our first grandson, Ricardo.

However, whilst we miss the alpacas and the country lifestyle, our yarn business continues to grow with every passing year and new opportunities have arisen.

The Present

We have now established a retail yarn business in addition to the online store by appointing retail (Craft) shops around Australia who carry stock of our yarns, making them even more accessible, and often we find customers want to “see and feel” the product rather than simply order online from a colour card.

Also, the range has expanded enormously with a wider variety of colours and styles. In addition to 8 ply knitting yarn in 100% alpaca, we also stock 4 ply yarns in cones for machine knitters and also 50 gram balls for the hand knitter. We have 10 ply boucle yarn and added some very interesting “random dye” colours.

Probably most exciting of all is the introduction of Ultrafine 2/28 yarns for fine lacy knitting and crochet work. These luxurious yarns are available in 100% Baby Alpaca and a blend of 70% alpaca and 30% silk in a large range of new colours and available in 50 gram balls as well as 500 gram cones or 1 kilogram cones.

These yarns are 2 ply and in 28 count, and are so fine and lightweight that a kilogram of yarn unrolls to an astonishing 14,000 metres (or 700 metres per ball).

We hope you will enjoy working with these amazing new fibres and welcome you to our online store.
